In the summer of 2002 I was introduced to the Polish breed by Dave Sim. He gave me a lovely young dark siamese sable buck to have some fun with. They soon took over in the shed and Dave became my mentor with the breed. I now keep them in marten sable, siamese sable, red eyed white, himalayan and my latest addition are torts. They are sprightly little rabbits with huge characters and attitudes to match!! In my opinion, when they are on the show table showing their little hearts out, there is no other breed like them.
That first buck was named Austin because his ring no was 02 A 01100 and he has done very well on the show table. He went to the Bradford Championship show at 10mnths old and won his class, went back the following year and came 7th in his class. Sadly Austin is no longer with us.
A medium siamese sable, son of Austin, showing himself well. It does take time and patience to get them to sit in their 'show pose'. I start teaching them to sit when they are around 8 weeks old, 5 minutes every day and they soon learn what is expected of them. When they sit in this position and are viewed from the side, the ears, through the shoulders and down through the front legs should form a vertical line and the back, from neck to tail should form a quarter circle and their belly should be well tucked up. Bucks have a longer show life than does and I prefer to show does under 5mnths old and then let them mature for breeding with when they are around 7mnths old.
An 11week old medium siamese sable doe learning to pose for the showtable. You can really see the shadings in this photo. She is a daughter of Austin. You can just see her ring on her back leg. All our show rabbits are rung and the ring numbers are registered in our names with the British Rabbit Council. They are rung as kits around 8 weeks old and the ring really doesn't bother them. I check rings regularily just incase it rubs on the leg or hay gets stuck and twisted in them.
The first of my 06 bred medium siamese sables is looking good at 4mnths old. This is a buck and I will be showing him later this year. He has a nice short flyback coat, nice bold head and has a lovely shape. You can see the nice quarter circle of his back and when he sits up he does have the straight line down through his ears, shoulders and front legs
This is a Marten Sable doe that was bred last year from a siamese sable doe and marten sable buck. Her body, head and legs are sable but her belly is white. She has white ticking where the body colour meets the belly colour. She has white eye circles, insides of ears, lines of the jaw , nostrils and underside of tail making her a very striking rabbit. She will not pose on the table but she stands up on her hind feet showing off her markings lovely! She is a breeding doe and is now running with her litter of 3 marten sable kits and they are all does. Father of the litter is Austin. I kept one of these young does for breeding with and now have a litter from her.
